Ken Rockwell: Menace or Resource?

[Note:  If you’ve found this page via a search engine, you might want to check out my rant on JPEG vs. RAW and Ken’s positions on the topic…]

I’m not even going to link this one, because I’m aggravated.  I’d even discourage you from going to his site to look.  Here’s the net: As part of commentary on the recent sale of a photo for an astounding $4.3M, Ken has made the statement in one of his most recent posts that if it isn’t captured on film, it isn’t art. He goes on to say that he isn’t aware of any iconic photo created on a digital camera.

He also has a post insinuating that you’re a pansy (well, that isn’t the word he uses, but I’m sure you’re getting the idea) if you think new equipment will improve your photography.

I know what I think, but I’m interested in hearing what you think.  Comments?  Thoughts? Opinions?

    • Elizabeth – thanks very much! I appreciate you taking the time to look at my Flickr – it is a bit of a mish-mash of personal pix and my photography. I guess that it what most Enthusiast Photographers have, right?

Thanks also for your comment on the post! I think maybe Ken has a little too much of the Goldberg Six in him?

  1. I’ve read quite a few of Ken Rockwell’s postings, and discussed his Web log with fellow amateur photographers. I have found some of Rockwell’s material informative, but I must admit that I completely disagree with him about some things. It’s always important to apply a critical eye to new material, regardless of the author, but I suppose the danger is that someone new to the field will accept Rockwell’s certain tone a little to easily.

  2. Read his about page!! Anyone who takes Ken’s opinions as Gospel are fools. And those who dismiss his opinions are narrow minded. Most of his opinions are quite valid except to you zealots.

    • Eric – I guess I’ll say this: I disagree with many of his opinions. His “About” page is pretty much a “Get out of jail free” card, and it seems like he hides behind it a lot. If you are OK with it, you are entitled to your opinion, just like I’m entitled to mine. Thanks for visiting and commenting!

    • Eric. Rockwell’s about page is just an excuse fabricated to alleviate the flak he takes for his stupid opinions on photography. Any time someone takes him to task for his verbal diarrhea he refers you to that page. His followers know this and they defend him with the same page. Do yourself a favor and search elsewhere for more sensible photographic fare.
